    Programme Content and Key Areas

    • Hazards of electricity:
      • Direct and indirect electric shock and its effect on the body, electrical burns
      • Electrical fires
      • Secondary hazards (e.g. falls from heights)
      • Rsks specifically associated with portable electrical equipment
      • Risks form charged storage equipment (batteries, capacitors etc)


    Control measure associated with working with electricity

    • Control measures:
      • Selection and suitability of equipment
      • Protective measures: fuses, earthing, isolation, reduced low voltage systems, residual current devices, double insulation
      • Inspection and maintenance strategies: user checks, formal inspection and tests, frequency of inspection and testing, records of inspection and testing

    Learning Outcomes

    On completion of this module, participants should be able to demonstrate understanding of the content through the application of knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar situations. In particular they should be able to:

    • Identify the hazards associated with the use of electricity in the workplace
    • Identify the control measures that need to be taken when working with electrical systems or using electrical equipment
