    The forms and classification of hazardous substances:

    • The forms of hazardous substance: dusts, fumes, gases, mists, vapours and liquids
    • Types of hazardous substances: chemical, biological, dusts
    • Routes of entry of hazardous substances into the body (ingestion, absorption, injection, inhalation)
    • The main classification of hazardous substances: irritant, corrosive, harmful, toxic, highly flammable and carcinogenic, oxidising, explosive and their appropriate recognised symbols

    Hazardous substance controls:

    • Replacing the hazardous by a less/non hazardous
    • Limiting exposure e.g. job rotation, limited time
    • Total or partial enclosure
    • Engineering control e.g. local exhaust ventilation
    • General ventilation
    • Safe storage
    • Safe systems of work
    • Good personal hygiene
    • Personal protective equipment e.g. respirators, gloves, overalls
    • Information, instruction, training and supervision

    Learning Outcomes

    On completion of this module, participants should be able to demonstrate understanding of the content through the application of knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar situations. In particular they should be able to:
