    This Course is Aimed at

    The course is aimed at managers, supervisors, designers, safety personnel, and senior contract employees. It is suitable for young engineers and anyone who would like to develop a more detailed understanding of process safety management.


    The Process Safety Management Foundations course provides the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the principles of process safety management across the entire organisation. All employees working with highly hazardous chemicals need to understand the safety, health and environmental hazards associated with their working environment.

    This two day course is delivered by Cogent Skills Assured Training Providers and involves a combination of presentations and discussions. Case studies and exercises are used throughout the course to illustrate interpretations of process safety management requirements and demonstrate ways to develop and monitor an effective process safety programme.

    All delegates are registered for an on-line self-assessment designed to reinforce their knowledge and understanding of process safety management.  This is completed between 6-12 weeks from completion of the training.  Delegates will have access to specially developed videos outlining the key principle messages of how important Process Safety Management is and how extensive the effect can be throughout your business.

    Programme Content and Key Areas


    • Outlining the importance of process safety management
    • Describing the types and properties of hazardous substances (including; classification, reaction hazards, toxic, fire, explosion and environmental hazards)
    • Outlining the legislative requirements with regard to effective emergency response (e.g. COMAH)
    • Explaining the various quantitative and qualitative risk assessment techniques (including occupied buildings risk assessments)
    • Defining what is meant by the terms ‘safety critical equipment’ and ‘key risk control systems’ including:
      • Plant (e.g. hard wired trips, pressure relief etc)
      • Process (management of change, permit to work, safety critical procedures etc)
      • People (e.g. competency, accountability, supervision, human factors, etc)
    • Providing an outline of relevant major accidents and investigation reports
    • Explaining how to develop and utilise leading and lagging process safety performance indicators
